tucket

Updates say Couldn’t check

Settings → Updates says Couldn’t check, every time, however many times you try. Nearly always this is not your internet. It is where Tucket is running from.

Why it happens

Tucket can only update itself from the Applications folder. An update works by replacing the app with a newer copy, and that needs somewhere it is allowed to write.

If Tucket was opened straight from the download, either from the disk image window or from the Downloads folder, macOS runs it from a temporary place that cannot be replaced. The update check fails before it reaches the network, and you get Couldn’t check every time.

The fix, which also gets you the newest version

This reinstalls Tucket in the right place. It takes a minute.

  1. Click the Tucket icon in the menu bar and choose Quit.
  2. Download Tucket again from trytucket.com/download.
  3. Open the downloaded file and drag Tucket into the Applications folder. Choose Replace if you are asked.
  4. Eject the Tucket disk from Finder’s sidebar.
  5. Open Tucket from Applications, or find it with Spotlight.

It still says Couldn’t check

Tucket is in Applications, you have reopened it, and Updates still says Couldn’t check.

Why: Now it really is the network. Tucket cannot reach trytucket.com to ask whether a newer version exists.

Fix: Check you are online, then check whether a VPN is in the way. A firewall app such as Little Snitch will also block it until you allow Tucket. If you are on a work or school network, it may be blocked there.

Good to know

  • Nothing is lost. Your clips, pinboards, settings and licence are stored separately from the app itself, so replacing the app leaves all of them exactly as they were.
  • You do not need your licence key again. It stays activated on this Mac.
  • Not sure where Tucket is running from? Open Settings, then About. If you are still unsure, doing the five steps above does no harm either way.
