Smart tags and AI summaries

Every text clip gets a short label the instant you copy it, so a wall of tiles is scannable. The tagging is rules rather than AI, so it is instant and works on every Mac.

What do the tags mean?

TagWhat it caught
URLA web address
EmailAn email address
Phone numberA phone number
AddressA postal address
CodeSomething that looks like source code
JSONText that parses as JSON
ColorA hex or rgb() value
QuoteQuoted prose
NoteEverything else, the fallback

Tagging is deterministic and runs on-device at copy time. When it is not confident it falls back to Note rather than guessing.

How do I change a tag it got wrong?

  1. Right-click the clip.
  2. Choose Rename Tag.
  3. Type what it should say.

What are the AI summaries?

On Macs with Apple Intelligence, a long prose clip gets a one-line summary shown as its label, so a copied article reads as what it is about instead of its first few words.

It runs entirely on-device through Apple’s FoundationModels. Nothing is sent anywhere.

Structured and code-like clips are never summarised, because with those the raw text is the point.

On Macs without Apple Intelligence this simply does nothing, and everything else keeps working exactly the same: tagging, colour naming, text recognition and sensitive-data detection.

How do I turn the summaries off?

Settings, then Intelligence, then AI summaries for long clips. The same section has Custom tagging, which offers an inline rename right after a tag is generated. Tags stay renameable from the right-click menu either way.
