Text inside your screenshots

Every image you copy is read on-device, so screenshots are searchable by their contents and you can lift the words straight back out. This is the feature people are most surprised by.

How do I find a screenshot by what it says?

  1. Open the popup and type a word you remember seeing in the image.
  2. The screenshot comes up alongside your text clips.

How do I get the text out of an image?

Two places, depending on whether you want to paste it or keep it.

  1. In the popup, tap the text badge on the image tile to extract and paste it.
  2. In All Clips, select the image and click Copy text in the detail pane.

How good is the recognition?

It keeps the layout rather than flattening everything into one run of words. Reading order, paragraphs and table columns survive, and headings are recognised so larger text in the image renders larger.

It runs on Apple’s Vision framework, entirely on your Mac, and results are cached per image so it never re-reads the same screenshot.

Can I search images by what is in them?

Yes. Alongside the text, Vision’s classifier tags what a picture actually shows, the same engine behind Photos search, so images are findable by subject even when they contain no text at all.
