Jot, notes as you copy

A small panel that appears after you copy something so you can write down why you kept it. Notes are searchable, which means a screenshot becomes findable by words that appear nowhere inside it.

How do I turn Jot on?

It is off by default, because a panel appearing after every copy is not for everyone.

  1. Open Settings, then Jot.
  2. Switch on Let me note new clips.
  3. Under Which copies bring it up, pick the formats worth noting. Images and Links are on to start with.

Will it steal my cursor mid-sentence?

No. This was the whole design problem, and it is the thing I would want to know before turning it on.

Jot appears beside what you are doing and never takes focus. Keep typing and your words keep going exactly where you sent them. Click into it only when you actually want to write something.

And once you are writing, the timer stops entirely. It will not vanish mid-thought.

How do I move it somewhere less annoying?

  1. Settings, then Jot, then Set position.
  2. The panel opens with no timer so you can take your time.
  3. Drag it where you want it, or pick one of the five corners.
  4. Reset puts it back to the centre.

How long does it stay?

Five seconds by default, adjustable from two to twenty in Settings, then Jot, then Stays for. Clicking into it stops the clock completely.

How do I note a clip I already copied?

  1. Right-click the clip in the popup or All Clips.
  2. Choose Add Note or Edit Note.
  3. Clips with a note show a small marker. Hover it to read the note.

Good to know

  • Jot can file the clip onto a pinboard at the same time, and inherits the board automatically if one is collecting.
  • A dragged position is stored as a proportion of the screen, so it survives changing resolution or moving to another display.
  • Your note is separate from the smart tag and is never overwritten by one.
